Counts as chariots for a Warriors of Chaos army part 2

Time off from work is a wonderful thing :) I managed to put in a few hours on these today, still have lots to do but they are shaping up more or less how I imagined them. The Helion riders will be getting some conversion work, mainly on the backpack to disguise the 40K look. There will be two riders the second one will be riding the rear haunches

Home made weathering pigments

Although I do use branded pigments (mainly Vallejo) I wanted to try and make my own as a way of trying to get my own blends. The idea is very simple, take some chalk pastels and scrape the edge with a sharp blade and use the resulting dust. Although the dust isn't the finest it works well on bases, but with some extra grinding I see no reason why it wouldn't work as dust for vehicles etc.
This is the result after mixing it with some acrylic brush on varnish. I made them in to a wet paste and applied them with an old brush. I think they would work well for tred/tire mud or areas of heavy rusting.

Forge Worlds Mounted Commissar part 3, the finished model.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out. I don't have the patience of the great miniature painters and as he is intended as a gaming piece I'm more than happy with the level of detail. Maybe one day I will get another copy of him and paint him to display standard?
The base was done using homemade weathering pigments and matt varnish combined with some GF9 Ash Flock. I will posting a brief guide about how I made my weathering pigments.

Forge Worlds Mounted Commissar part 2

I lost some of the white on the underside of the horse as i washed it with a thinned black wash, French Mirage Blue and Reflective Green mix. I have found that putting in a colour on the base helps me decide on how to progress further with the mini.

I achieved the dappled effect with three layers of French Mirage Blue mixed with white and carefully applied in rough blobs, getting lighter and smaller blobs with each layer.
Once dry i washed over with a mix of French Mirage Blue, black and Reflective Green. Gradually working my way on to the back of the horse. I think in total it was around 10 layers.

Forge Worlds Mounted Commissar part 1

This is around a year old, but I thought posting here may be of some interest. Parts 2 and 3 will follow soon
So to start us of here is Forgeworld's  mounted Death Korps Of Krieg Commissar. I really like the model but i felt the horses breathing mask looked unfinished/weird so i sculpted on a lower jaw for the skull design on it's gas mask.

Stage one painting:
I used Vallejo paints:
White
Black
Reflective Green
English Uniform
French Mirage Blue
GW paints
Black wash
Devlan mud wash
Shinning Gold
Chainmail

The coat of the Commissar is a very dark green, i felt it would give a richer finish to the final model. The fetlocks will be a dark brown or black i will blend them more during the next stage. I found this as reference for the horse, i won't copy it exactly but it's near the finish I'm after.

Karchev and a Kodiak

When I opened my Karchev I was a bit miffed that he came with two left legs :( But a bit of careful sawing and some sculpting sorted it out) I did contact PP about the missing part, but got no reply which is pretty bad imo. I also left of his "hula" skirt cause I think it looks bloody ridiculous.
The Kodiak was fun to weather up and when I do something like it in the future I will try and do a tutorial on the process I used.

OOP Champions of Chaos

I have spent lots of time on e-bay the last year searching for OOP models that i had when i was a teenager (really wish i had kept my stash of models) these are the first two that i have finished. I intend to use them as hero's or together in a unit as chosen once i have collected a few more.
